Plot:
A small film crew head out to a small island to shoot a documentary on blood surfing. The two surfers cut their feet and surf in shark infested waters. What the crew don’t know is that a giant saltwater crocodile lives in the waters and doesn’t like trespassers. Now the crew along with some others must battle to survive. They team together with a bounty hunter who has it in for the croc.

It seems there are a lot of direct to video monster run amok movies lately and they seem to range from good to awful. Blood Surf is in the middle, it’s not great but it’s not unmatchable. The acting isn’t all bad, while it’s not great the actors do a decent enough job, really liked Katie Fisher as the female lead. The direction is pretty tight there are some nice shots and the surf scenes are great. The croc didn’t look to bad for the first part of the movie when it was mostly off screen, it looked rubbery but still not bad.

The movie has quite a few fun moments, the surfing with the sharks is nice stuff. There are a few suspense scenes that worked quite well, loved the scene set on the docks. There is two nice gore scenes, one guy gets ripped in half and someone else gets lots of spikes shoved through him. Also there is quite a bit of tits shots and the girls are pretty hot. I enjoyed the sub plot involving a group of criminals the group runs into on the island.

On the down side the movie takes awhile to get into, there are a lot of dull scenes with not much happening in them. The characters are very flat, one wouldn’t care about any of them. We have one selfish asshole who just comes off as annoying. It doesn’t help that the characters do stupid things, one girl jumps into the water to film the croc, one guess as to how that turns out.

There is a sub plot involving a Quint like character who has a personal vendetta against the croc. I didn’t care much for this sub plot and felt it dragged the movie, could of done without it. The chunk of the movie devoted to this sub plot just dragged, it did nothing for me, would of preferred if they extended the plot about the group criminals instead.

While there are two good gore scenes the rest of the movie is rather dry, we get a lot bloodless chomping scenes and off scene kills, should of upped the gore level a bit. Also the CGI croc looked far to crappy and was sore on the eyes when it was on screen, should of used the rubber croc more.

Over all Blood Surf isn’t all bad, it’s enjoyable enough to not be a total waste of time. It has a lot of problems all right and could have been a lot better but you could do a lot worse then this, it‘s better then a lot of creature run amok movies and it‘s really is just a bit of fun.
