Plot: In the North Atlantic waters a oil rig is drilling deeper then any other before it. A reporter with her cameraman are sent out to find out if the drilling is environmentally safe. While drilling the rig breaks through the seabed it drills into a new ocean that’s been hidden for millions of years. Some prehistoric fish break through but little do the crew on the rig know that among those to break out is a Megalodon, a sixty foot shark.

Oh man, talk about a bad, bad movie. I don’t know where to start with this movie. The plot itself is basic enough but problem I had with the movie is that it’s just boring. The characters themselves are extremely flat, I didn’t give a crap about a single one of them. It’s a shame because a lot of the first part of the movie is spent with the characters and it just drags and becomes very dull. It isn’t helped by the fact that no one can act. The female lead walks around with a blank expression on her face for most of the movie.

The movie drags and drags a lot, it takes ages for the Megalodon to show the hell up and when it does it’s just a case of to little to late. Lets face it the movie should have been an all out action movie with constant shark attacks. Speaking of which I felt the writers really didn’t know what to do with the shark as the attacks are very repetitive. I’d say the small budget was probably one reason for this. The characters spend most of the time in subs or an underwater elevator that takes them to an ocean floor.

The death scenes themselves look terrible, someone told me the movie was edited for a PG-13 rating, whoever had that bright idea should be shot. The editing around some of the bloodier scenes is absolutely terrible, it goes by far to quickly and you’ve no idea what just happened. It doesn’t help that there is no suspense built up before hand. What gore we do get it a floating severed head, some fish biting, people are shaken around in submarines quite a bit and bleed a little.

I have very few positive things to say about Megalodon. Firstly the CGI effects aren’t that bad for this kind of movie, the shark looked pretty decent. The direction, while not great, isn’t to bad, there are a few decent shots. Also there is one scene set in an underwater tunnel with loads of prehistoric fish that looks fantastic. The fish are colourful and really lights the scene up and the CGI on them is bang on the money. There is some OK suspense squeezed out of the movie when the cast finally get out of the damn elevator and are running around on the artic ice. The shark keeps smashing up from under the ice as they run over it, decent stuff. The ending is quite decent, nice shot, a bit of a tease though.

Hopefully someday Steve Altman’s book Meg will become a feature film and we’ll finally get a decent movie about the Megalodon. Until then I’d have to recommend Shark Attack 3: Megalodon while it’s not great it’s a lot more entertaining then this muck, at least it‘s hilariously awful. Megalodon commits the worst movie sin, it’s boring, it’s long, it’s badly paced and edited. I can’t recommend this bore for anyone.

COVER REVIEW:

The cover art shows a giant shark bursting up through the water and some subs underneath it. All right cover art for a pretty poor movie. People might be suckered into thinking there is a lot more Megalodon action.
